Laminate Countertops

Durable laminate countertops come in a host of colors, patterns and textures. They resist grease & stains, and typically cost a fraction of what most other counter options cost.

What are Laminates?

Decorative Laminates are manufactured by fusing layers of paper and resin under high pressure and heat to create a rigid sheet (single surface) that can be cut, shaped, and glued onto medium-density fiberboard.

Technically:
The top coat of a laminate is typically a melamine resin-saturated overlay. The second sheet, which determines the surface color or pattern of your countertop, is also typically melamine resin-saturated paper which may be a color or a print. Anything can be printed on the paper on this sheet - even a photographic image of wood or stone. (Some manufacturers offer styles that mimic natural stone, metal, and wood.) Below the first two levels are typically three to nine sheets of phenolic resin-saturated kraft paper which have been compressed for 60 minutes at roughly half a ton per square inch, at a temperature over 280°F.

High-end laminates like Formica's ColorCore® are melamine-based, keeping surface color consistent throughout the sheet. With such consistency, nicks and scratches are less likely to be seen.
